19th February 1959 – ‘Outside’ broadcast (BBC tv)

Following almost a year after their first television job (see Amphitryon 38, March 1958) Desmond is now teamed up with Maddalena Fagandini (with assistance form Dick Mills) for Outside, which may also be their first documentary.

Life inside prisons always excites curiosity, and a great many films and plays have been written about it. Much rarer is the work, like tonight’s documentary, which deals with life ‘outside’.

Radio Times

This work is described as a “prison cell sequence” but erroneously as being from as an ‘experimental drama’ on BBC Radiophonic Workshop – 21 and A Retrospective, but In Special Sound it’s correctly discussed as a documentary.

There are several pages given over to Outside in Special Sound with a score and analysis of its three sections. It’s simply evocative of prison though. Chains and keys rattle. A door is unlocked and uneasy patterns set in. A gong sounds out. All very chilly and dark. Was this inside, before being outside, or the inside following you outside?
