1st April 1958 – The Radiophonic Workshop is officially opened

The BBC announces the opening of the Radiophonic Workshop with a press conference.

The four staff members at this point were Daphne Oram, Desmond Briscoe, Dickie Bird and Oram’s friend Jeannie MacDowell who was assigned as assistant to Dickie and had been previously employed in the BBC Control Room (see Neibur p.57). Ken Squires was an engineer at Maida Vale who also helped a lot with getting the equipment working. Norman Bain was a BBC Studio Manager who was visiting the Workshop in the first year to assist with various projects. Most of this month was taken up with work on The Ocean (see Neibur p.60-62)
